The soft power of a picture you can touch

Rock & Rolls of Film

Let me tell you a story.

When I was 12 years old I was gifted my first camera, a film Nikon f60, and it never left my side. I was an avid (amateur) photographer from the first click, something in me needed to take pictures to make sure moments didn't disappear, to make them last forever.

As I loved so much to take pictures I studied and became a professional, but going back to film connects me with my passion and my why every single time.

When shooting film every click matters, the limitation of the 36 frames in a roll is a gift. You have to, even if it is for less than a second, stop time, hold the breathe, feel the geometry in the rectangle and then click, and then wait for the magic.

This is a passion that the Galaxy's team share, every time we travel or escape to nature we gather our cameras and rolls and usually leave the digital behind, film is our choice for personal work and memories.

There is a hidden gem in those pictures, something that I recently discovered, I call it silence. These family pictures where not taken in silence, kids talk and laugh and yell and, even though they are not portrayed there is more people by the river, etc, but the pictures have silence. I believe is this need to hold the breath for a fraction of a second, this world stopping moment to feel the shot before click, this thing that happens behind the camera is somehow captured in the image.

Last year a couple, this couple in the picture, said to me that they loved our work, but that they specially loved what we did in our personal pictures, and asked to shoot their wedding in film. What a gift, I will forever be grateful because it was one of those door opening moments.

Ever since we've been transforming our way of looking at our work, understanding that we can bring our authentic passion for photography, the one we felt in love with in the first place, and give it to our couples. Through film and also through incorporating this way of time-stopping shooting to our digital work more and more.

You often ask, why is film best? what do we get from that?” when you see it as an option in our pricing lists. And I always say it is mostly something about the poetry of craftsmanship, it is a warmth that can not be pretended that is given by the material. There is some technical aspects too, like the dynamic range that gives more information to the over and underexposed parts of the picture, it is nice for weddings mostly because the details in the white fabric are richer. But to me, is an investment that you give out of love.

With love, Milena
